John has certainly delivered what might be regarded as traditional portraits. More recently, however, not only does each portrait have the sitter or sitters as the focal point of the work, but within the painting John often creates a short visual biography of the individual, creating a tableau containing motifs and symbols which can reveal aspects of the person’s life, profession, likes, dislikes, etc.
